City flushes name of Main Sewage Treatment Playground, park now to be called Ashbridge’s Bay Sports Hub
Main Sewage Treatment Playground at Eastern and Emdaabiimok avenues is being renamed to Ashbridge’s Bay Sports Hub.
The “urgent” motion presented by Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher was passed last week at Toronto Council.
The park is an 11.2-hectare space that features a rugby field, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, a skatepark, and most recently, pickleball courts. It’s also home to a Toronto Water Pumping Station.
People who use the space have been wanting a new name for a while, and the addition of the 11 pickleball courts was the final reason to bring about the change.
In her notice of motion at Toronto Council’s meeting that started July 29, Fletcher said: “This well-used park is located on land owned by Toronto Water and serves as an important community space, especially in the summer months. The new name should be reflective of the area and the great wide-range facilities available.”
Since it has one of the very few tournament-ready pickleball facilities in the city, the current name has highlighted confusion about its location and amenities, council was told.
Now that the name change has been passed by council, the city can begin making administrative changes to how the park is referred to and start to work on the installation of new signage.
