Council races in Beaches-East York, Scarborough Southwest and Toronto-Danforth feature numerous candidates as deadline to register is this afternoon

With only a few hours left for candidates to register to run in this October’s Toronto municipal election, there is certainly no shortage contenders seeking councillor seats in the wards of Beaches-East York, Scarborough Southwest and Toronto-Danforth.
With two of those races (Beaches-East York and Toronto-Danforth) not having the incumbent councillors seek re-election, a number of prominent names are putting themselves forward for the now open positions.
The deadline for candidates to register to run for mayor, councillor or school trustee in the upcoming municipal election is 2 p.m. today (Friday, Aug. 21).
As of 10:30 a.m. today, 14 candidates have put their name forward for the council race in Beaches-East York. They are Jaana Syeda Ali, James Dann, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Fatima Ibrahimi, Natalie Johnson, Tycen Legg, Kevin Morrison, Karsten Riedel, Mohammad Shabani, Adam Smith, Austin Vieira, Jeff Wahl, Devin Wilkins, and Jennie Worden. The ward’s incumbent councillor Brad Bradford (who was first elected to the position in 2018) has registered to run in the mayoral race and will not be seeking to return to the council seat.
The race to see who will be Toronto-Danforth’s new councillor saw some twists and turns earlier this week as incumbent Paula Fletcher had registered on Aug. 17 to seek re-election, but she changed her mind two days later and announced on Aug. 19 that she would be withdrawing from the race and ending her 23-year career as the area’s councillor.
As of 10:30 a.m. today, eight candidates have registered to run to become the new councillor for Toronto-Danforth. They are Maqsood Ahmad, Susan Chapelle, Dennis Corcoran, Sara Ehrhardt, George Fawcett, Michael Mitchell, Jason Stevens, and Denise Walcott.
Though incumbent councillor Parthi Kandavel is seeking re-election in Scarborough Southwest, the field is a crowded one with eight candidates registered to run as of 10:30 a.m. today.
Those candidates are Malik Ahmad, Laikul Choudhury, Parthi Kandavel, Ariel-Rachel Karokis, Luigi Lisciandro, Sharmina Nasrin, Mohammad Ali Reza, and Kevin Rupasinghe. It should be noted that two other candidates, Beau Duquesnay and Phillip Mills, had registered to run for councillor in Scarborough Southwest but have since withdrawn.
Beach Metro Community News will update our readers later today once the city’s registration deadline has passed and there is a final list of candidates.
Toronto’s municipal election will take place on Oct. 26 and voters will be electing a mayor, local councillor and school trustees.
