Queen Street East’s Castle of the Four Winds open house and tour planned for Oct. 18

Local historybuffs are invited to a special event featuring one of East Toronto’s most unique buildings later this month.
Realtor Carrie Bryce is hosting a tour of the building often referred to as the Castle on the Hill or the Castle of the Four Winds (Chateau des Quatre Vents) on Queen Street East, overlooking Lake Ontario, just east of the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant.
The building at the foot of private lane Rockaway Crescent was first built as a cottage in 1892 and then expanded by the owner William Murray under the design of architect Edward Lennox. Murray named the house Chateau des Quatre Vents (Castle of the Four Winds).
Lennox was the architect who designed Toronto’s famous Casa Loma and Toronto’s Old City Hall among numerous other buildings in the city including the King Edward Hotel.
Murray bought the land Castle of the Four Winds is located on as an estate from Sir Henry Pellat, who commissioned Lennox to design Casa Loma in the Gothic Revival Style.
Castle of the Four Winds is designed in the Queen Anne Style.
The house is now for sale and realtor Bryce is opening the ‘hidden jewel’ for a tour led by Beach historian Gene Domagala on Sunday, Oct. 18. The tour is from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
The address is 3025 Queen St. E., and the ‘castle’ is located on the south side and can be accessed from Rockaway Crescent lane.
The site is private property and should not be visited (except during the hours of this Sunday’s open house/tour) without an appointment. For more information, go to https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/30230691/3025-queen-street-e-toronto-birchcliffe-cliffside
