Fallen trees, damaged cars reported in East Toronto after yesterday’s intense storm ripped through city

Sections of East Toronto were hit hard by the severe thunderstorms and high winds that ripped through the city on the afternoon and early evening of Wednesday, Sept. 2.

A number of trees came down in the area just southwest of Woodbine Avenue and Gerrard Street East.

A look through that neighbourhood on the morning of Thursday, Sept. 3, revealed fallen trees on a number of streets including Bowmore Road and nearby Wrenson Road.

Two of the fallen trees landed on parked cars, and other tree limbs could be seen on the front porch of a house on Bowmore Road close to Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School. A large tree in front of the school had also been snapped and fallen onto Bowmore Road.

Heavy rains caused flooding and ponding on roads in a number of areas including along Cosburn Avenue near Glebemount Avenue.

It is estimated that in some areas of the city, more than 100 millimetres of rain fell during the height of the storm’s intensity. The heavy rain was accompanied by lightning, large hail and high winds in many areas of Toronto yesterday.

Today’s weather is now sunny, hot and dry and clean-up efforts for fallen trees and flooded basements is beginning.
