East Toronto’s A Senior Moment group to celebrate five years of building community support at Feb. 22 luncheon

A Senior Moment luncheon, hosted by Colleen Taylor and Carol Farrington, will be happening on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m., at the Kingston House (676 Kingston Rd.).
This month’s luncheon will be celebrating A Senior Moment’s fifth year with two surprise guest speakers from Edward Jones and a raffle.
The monthly social gathering for seniors has been taking place since February of 2021, at different restaurants in the East Toronto area.
The idea came from a recognition of the need among local seniors for community and support, as well as friendship in retirement. Over the last few years, the gathering grew in numbers from seven to 29 regular attendees, with the hopes to continue to grow, according to Taylor.
“At this time, it’s basically all women, and there are 29 of us. What’s interesting is how it was a casual outing and people have their own friend groups that they didn’t have before, who they hang out together with, which is what the intention was,” said Farrington.
Group members range from 70 to 90 years old, sharing a goal to socialize and support each other through anything.
According to Taylor, it is “so important that everyone feels safe and comfortable enough to ask for help, no matter what they’re dealing with,” and not to be alone.
Additionally, Taylor and Farrington intend to start up a mid-month coffee group as well on or around the 10th of each month, which will be officially scheduled and announced in March.
“What I want people to feel is warmth, community and support,” said Taylor.
