Family Day is coming a bit early in the Beach this year. In order to allow Queen Street East businesses to take part in the festivities, the annual party hosted by the Beach Business Improvement Area (BIA) will take place on Sunday, Feb. 17, from noon to 5 p.m.
There will be live entertainment along Queen from Neville Park to Lockwood, said BIA board member Susan Fowler, including a hula hoop station and a fire juggler. There will be an antique trolley travelling back and forth along Queen, which will be free to hop on and off. Over 40 stores will have activities and promotions, and the Fox Theatre will host an indoor show featuring, among others, Drama Kids, Cresswell Dance Academy and Alyona Dance, from 12:15 to 3:15 p.m.
New this year will be activities for those without small children, held in licensed establishments.
“We’re doing beer and wine tastings at a whole bunch of our bars and pubs. Families aren’t just families with kids, if you’re a couple you’re a family too,” said Fowler.
Also featured this year are 11 ice sculptors spread along the length of the street, which Fowler said she’s particularly excited to see.
“I think it should be a good family day. We’re kind of excited about it, because it’s nice to do something and get the whole street involved,” she said. “Come down and have a ride on the trolley, and watch them chipping away at the ice.”
