Canadian Tire making plans to continue local operations prior to demolition of Danforth Avenue site for new development

The Canadian Tire on Danforth Avenue could soon be relocated while construction crews develop a residential construction project at the site.
The development plan for the 2681 Danforth Ave. site, between Main Street and Dawes Road, will see two residential towers with heights of 33 and 48 storeys, consisting of 1,050 new residential dwelling units.
Of the total proposed units, 21 will be delivered as affordable under an “in kind contribution”; a non-cash provision given to the city in lieu of mandatory cash fees such as a Community Benefits Charge or Community Amenity Contributions. The proposed development will also include an on-site parkland dedication.
As part of the proposal, both towers will be connected by a two-to-eight-storey base and feature a total gross floor area of 84,881 square metres, as well as 12,21 square metres of non-residential gross floor area in the podium, which could allow for Canadian Tire’s return following construction.
While construction is taking place, it had been speculated that the Canadian Tire store would temporarily operate out the former location of the Lowe’s store at Shopper’s World (Victoria Park and Danforth avenues).
In an email to Beach Metro Community News, Canadian Tire’s Manager of Corporate Communications Brooke Kelly said the company is working to “build a plan” that could allow the store to continue operation while construction work is carried out.
“Canadian Tire has proudly served customers in Toronto’s east end for many years, and we remain committed to the community,” said Kelly in her email.
“With nearby redevelopment activity, we are building a plan that will allow us to continue to serve our customers in the area. We look forward to sharing details once they are finalized, and we continue to welcome customers at our current Danforth store.”
The Canadian Tire at 2681 Danforth has been operating since the 1970s. By 2000, a zoning bylaw amendment was submitted to the city calling for the replacement of an existing Canadian Tire store with a larger one.
In recent years, the area surrounding the proposed development has seen a surge in residential construction projects, including the 6 Dawes Rd. development, three towers adjacent to the Main Square Community Centre, and the Sobey’s project at 2451 to 2495 Danforth Ave., west of Main Street.
