Beaches-East York federal byelection set for Monday, Aug. 31

The federal byelection in Beaches-East York will take place on Monday, Aug. 31.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the date of the byelection in a news release on the morning of Sunday, July 26.

Federal bylections will also be taking place on Aug. 31 in the ridings of North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia and Chicoutim-Le Fjord in Quebec.

The federal seat in Beaches-East York became vacant after Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith officially stepped down from the position on July 7.

At a nomination meeting on Saturday, July 18, Beaches-East York Liberals selected Tanveer Shahnawaz as their candidate for the federal byelection.

Candidates for the federal NDP, Conservatives and Green Party in Beaches-East York are not yet known.

Voters in East Toronto will be busy the week of Aug. 31 as a provincial byelection for the riding Scarborough Southwest is also expected to take place on Thursday, Sept. 3. That provincial byelection is expected to be officially called on either Wednesday, July 29, or Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Advance polls for the Beaches-East York federal byelection will be on Friday, Aug. 21; Saturday, Aug. 22; Sunday, Aug. 23; and Monday, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Polls will be open on Monday, Aug. 31, the day of the Beaches-East York federal byelection, from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
