East Toronto residents should be prepared for weekend transit challenges as GO line and subway closures planned

Getting into downtown Toronto this weekend by public transit is going to be a challenge for residents living east of the Don River this weekend.
There will be no GO train service on the Lakeshore East Line on Saturday, Nov. 7 and Sunday, Nov. 8. GO trains will not run between Rouge Hill and Union stations, including Danforth station in East Toronto, due to planned construction.
Also, to make the trek into downtown from the east side even more challenging, a portion of the Bloor-Danforth subway line will also be closed this weekend, which will make the journey west longer.
GO service adjustments begin tonight (Friday, Nov. 6) with the last train heading east out of Union at 11:04 p.m. Later eastbound trains that are usually scheduled will not run.
On the weekend, GO buses will travel from Durham College Oshawa to Pickering station and then directly to Union. Passengers from other stops on the Lakeshore East GO line will have to take alternative transit.
Usually, that would mean taking the TTC Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth) and then switching to southbound Line 1 at Bloor/Yonge station (Yonge-University line), but there is no subway service between Broadview and St. George stations this weekend due to planned track work.
TTC shuttle buses will be running along the closed portion. Other impacted subway stations due to this weekend’s closure will be Bay and Sherbourne. Also, and the Yonge Street entrance to Bloor-Yonge stations will all be closed.
Streetcars (including the 501 Queen Street East and the 506 Carlton from Main Station) are also an option for those heading downtown this weekend, but their use will depend on the destination and how much time riders are willing to spend travelling.
Regular TTC subway service resumes on Monday, Nov. 9, at 6 a.m. GO Transit is also expected to be back on its regular weekday schedule on Monday morning.
The closure comes just in time for two Toronto Maple Leafs games at Scotiabank Arena this weekend. The Leafs play their longtime rivals the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, Nov. 7, and then host the New Jersey Devils on Sunday, Nov. 8, for the annual Hockey Hall of Fame Game.
Also, The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is on at Exhibition Place this weekend.
