Toronto Votes 2026: Deadline for municipal election candidates to register to run is this Friday

With less than five days to register as a candidate in this fall’s municipal elections, Toronto-Danforth boasts significantly less council candidates compared Beaches-East York and Scarborough Southwest.
Toronto voters head to the polls on Monday, Oct. 26, to elect councillors, school board trustees and a mayor. Candidates have until Friday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. to register.
Toronto’s municipal government oversees policies that govern daily residential services such as public transit, police services, roads, water and sewers, waste collection, parks, and childcare.
As of the morning of Monday, Aug. 17, there are currently just three registered candidates running for the councillor seat in Toronto-Danforth. They are Susan Chapelle, Jason Stevens, and Denise Walcott. Councillor Paula Fletcher, who currently holds the seat as the ward’s councillor, has yet to register as candidate.
In contrast, both Beaches-East York and Scarbrough Southwest have 10 registered contenders for their respective councillor seats.
Those registered so far to run for councillor in Beaches-East York are Jaana Syeda Ali, James Dann, Natalie Johnson, Tycen Legg, Kevin Morrison, Adam Smith, Austin Vieira, Jeff Wahl, Devin Wilkins, and Jennie Worden. The ward’s incumbent councillor Brad Bradford has registered to run in the mayoral race and will not be seeking to return to the council seat.
The 10 candidates registered to run so far in Scarborough Southwest are Malik Ahmed, Laikul Choudhury, Naser Kaid, Parthi Kandavel , Rachel-Ariel Karokis, Luigi Lisciandro, Philip Mills, Sharmina Nasrin, Mohammad Ali Reza, and Kevin Rupasinghe. Kandavel is the incumbent councillor and is seeking re-election.
