Beaches-East York MPP Mary-Margaret McMahon, with support from the Taylor-Massey Residents Wellness Council, will be hosting a World Cup watch party on the evening of Thursday, June 18, for the Canadian team’s second game of the tournament.

The community watch party will take place near the splash pad in Dentonia Park, 80 Thyra Rd., starting at 6 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring their own blanket or lawn chair to sit on, and the event takes place rain or shine.

This Thursday’s match, being played in Vancouver, will see Canada take on Qatar in both teams’ second World Cup games. Canada’s opening World Cup match in Group B, played on Friday, June 12, in Toronto ended in a 1-1 tie with Bosnia-Herzegovina. Qatar’s first game against Switzerland, played in San Francisco on June 13, also ended in a 1-1 tie.

Canada’s first game last Friday saw patios along Queen Street East busy with enthusiastic soccer fans watching history in the making as Canada not only hosted its first ever World Cup game but also earned its first point in tournament play. Canada had previously appeared in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, playing a total of six matches in which they did not notch a win or a tie.

Prior to the game, eight-year-old Jake said he was excited to see Canada play.

“I love that they’re here (in Toronto) representing our country. This is really important to us,” he said as he sat with a large group of family members on the patio of The Gull and Firkin on Queen Street East.

After this Thursday’s match against Qatar, Canada’s next Group B game will be against Switzerland on Wednesday, June 24, in Vancouver.
