Federal Election 2025: Races in Beaches-East York, Scarborough Southwest and Toronto-Danforth starting to take shape

A federal election will take place on April 28, 2025.

East Toronto voters will be going to the polls to elect a new federal government on Monday, April 28.

The federal election was officially called on Sunday, March 23 – kicking off a five-week (36-day) campaign which is the shortest amount of time allowed by Elections Canada.

Locally, Beach Metro Community News will be covering the races in the ridings of Beaches-East York, Scarborough Southwest and Toronto-Danforth.

The deadline for candidates to register to run in this federal election is Monday, April 7.

Here is information on the local ridings and the candidates running in them that Beach Metro Community News is aware of as of March 28.

BEACHES-EAST YORK

The race for Beaches-East York will see incumbent Liberal Nathaniel Erskine-Smith challenged for the seat by Conservative Party candidate Jocelyne Poirier, Green Party candidate Jack Pennings, and NDP candidate Shannon Devine.

Erskine-Smith was first elected as MP for the riding in 2015 and was returned in the 2019 and 2021 elections.

SCARBOROUGH SOUTHWEST

The race for Scarborough Southwest will see incumbent Liberal Bill Blair challenged by Green Party candidate Amanda Cain, NDP candidate Fatima Shaban, and Conservative Party candidate Asm Tarun.

Blair was first elected as MP for the riding in 2015 and was returned in the 2019 and 2021 elections.

TORONTO-DANFORTH

The race for Toronto-Danforth will see incumbent Liberal Julie Dabrusin challenged by NDP candidate Clare Hacksel.

So far, the candidates for the Conservative Party and Green Party in Toronto-Danforth are not yet known.

Dabrusin was first elected as MP for the riding in 2015 and was returned in the 2019 and 2021 elections.
