Main Street Presto gates officially opened

For the past several weeks, commuters who use the Main Street transit station have been testing out the newly-installed Presto-enabled fare gates under the watchful eyes of numerous transit and Presto workers huddled together at the front of the station.

But it wasn’t until this morning — under the guidance of a number of politicians and transit officials — that the city’s first Presto card fare gates were officially unveiled.

Main Street station is the first Toronto subway station to have the electronic fare gates installed, with TTC chair Josh Colle noting this morning that the station was chosen because it is a streetcar station, and also because of its proximity to the Danforth GO station. The Presto system is being rolled out in phases, with the intention that the entire system will be Presto-enabled by the end of the year.

Officials in attendance included Spadina-Fort York Liberal MP Adam Vaughn, Beaches-East York Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Beaches-East York MPP Arthur Potts, and Ward 31 councillor Janet Davis.
