World Menopause Day is on Sunday, Oct. 18, and the Sinai Health Foundation’s Cold Plunge Challenge is coming to Woodbine Beach.

Participants will gather in the morning to do a cold plunge in Lake Ontario to raise awareness and support for women’s health research and care. Menopause influences 70 per cent of age-related diseases, but less than one per cent of preclinical aging studies worldwide consider it in their research.

Sinai Health, which includes Mount Sinai Hospital, Henrick Bridgepoint Hospital, and Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, is at the forefront of changing this. Through the Weston and O’Born Centre for Mature Women’s Health at Mount Sinai, they are working to close the gaps that exist in research, education, and care.

Crystal Trumper is doing her second cold plunge in support of the menopause clinic that helped her reclaim her quality of life after an early-stage cancer diagnosis. She experienced surgical menopause after having her ovaries and uterus removed.

“When I got to the menopause clinic, I felt so supported,” said Trumper in a press release shared by Sinai Health.

She wanted to help make it possible for others to receive the same care she did, and felt a sense of connection with fellow participants.

“The energy was amazing. There were all these women cheering each other on with their families and friends watching,” said Trumper. “It was so cool to see people in the water, staying there and groups hugging each other to stay warm. That sense that we’re doing something hard, but we’re doing it for a purpose, together, that’s what is bringing me back.”

World Menopause Day was founded by the International Menopause Society (IMS) in 2009 to raise awareness of menopause. This year’s theme is Chronic Pain at Midlife.

Registration for Sunday’s plunge is $15. For more information on how to get involved, please visit https://give.supportsinai.ca/event/the-cold-plunge-challenge-wmd-2026
