With the end of this year fast approaching, local residents are reminded that the Balmy Beach Canoe Club’s annual Hair of the Dog Run will welcome 2026 on the morning of Thursday, Jan. 1.

The run begins on New Year’s Day morning on the Boardwalk at the Balmy Beach Club, 360 Lake Front, with participants starting to gather at 11 a.m.

The Hair of the Dog Run will celebrate its 44th edition with the 2026 run. The event first took place in 1980 and has become a New Year’s Day tradition for many residents.

Though the weather is expected to be frosty this Thursday, a large number of participants are expected to turn out for the walk/run.

Funds raised at the Hair of the Dog Run go to support the amateur athletics programs at the Balmy Beach Canoe Club.

The event is open to serious runners, recreational walkers, adults, children and entire families.

Participants have the choice of doing either a three-kilometre walk or a nine-kilometre run. There are a variety of registration price ranges for tickets depending on the options chosen.

The walk starts at 11:30 a.m. and the run begins at noon. The start and finish line is on the Boardwalk, south side of the Balmy Beach Club.
