Gerrard India Bazaar Diwali celebration slated for this Saturday night

Diwali celebrations take place along Gerrard Street East in this Beach Metro Community News file photo.

The Gerrard India Bazaar will be hosting its annual Diwali Mela celebrations on the night of Saturday, Oct. 18.

Events at the free celebration, which takes place from 6 to 10 p.m., will be centred around 1432 Gerrard St. E., but will include businesses all along the Gerrard India Bazaar from Coxwell to Greenwood avenues.

The evening will include a live DJ, sparklers, performances, dancing, special treats, sidewalk sales and more.

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, and one of the most important celebrations in India, with variations throughout Sikhism and Janaism. Diwali honours the spiritual triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

The celebration also marks the return of the Hindu god Rama to his kingdom in Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. Diwali is also associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, as people keep their homes clean and full of light, praying for blessings.
