From The Cellar: Four personalities. Four wines. Which one are you?

Which wine personality are you? Are you an Adventurer, a Traditionalist, a Romantic or a Bold Explorer? Pour yourself a glass and read on. Photo: Beach Metro Community News.

Have you ever noticed how differently people approach a wine list?

Some immediately order a familiar favourite, while others search for something they’ve never tasted. Some prefer elegance and subtlety; others want a wine that makes a statement.

After years of teaching and judging wine, I’ve learned that our preferences are as individual as our personalities. So, which wine personality best describes you?

THE ADVENTURER “Surprise me! I want something different.”

Casal Garcia Vinho Verde DOC| Vinho Verde, Portugal | $12.00 | LCBO #530261

The Adventurer enjoys discovering unfamiliar grapes, regions and flavours. Vinho Verde comes from northwestern Portugal, where Atlantic influences help create the region’s characteristically fresh, lively wines featuring citrus, green apple and a gentle spritz. Despite its name, Vinho Verde doesn’t refer to the wine’s colour. It means “green wine,” traditionally associated with the region’s youthful, fresh style.

It’s approachable, affordable and a reminder that discovering something new doesn’t have to be intimidating. Enjoy with grilled shrimp with lime, fresh coriander and a little chili.

Sometimes the most rewarding bottle is the one you’ve never heard of.

THE TRADITIONALIST“I know what I like, and there’s nothing wrong with that!”

Masi Campofiorin Rosso del Veronese IGT| Veneto, Italy | $24.75 | LCBO #155051

The Traditionalist appreciates consistency, familiar flavours and a wine that delivers pleasure without surprises. First produced in 1964, Campofiorin helped establish Masi’s reputation for using dried grapes to bring additional richness and character to Veneto wines.

This wine offers ripe cherries, spice and a smooth, generous texture. Its distinctive production method adds richness and depth to the wine. Try alongside slow-braised beef with rosemary and creamy polenta.

Returning to a favourite isn’t a lack of adventure. Sometimes it’s simply good taste.

THE ROMANTIC “I prefer elegance over power.”

Oyster Bay Pinot Noir| New Zealand | $21.95 | VINTAGES #590414

The Romantic appreciates subtlety, fragrance and balance. Oyster Bay’s Pinot Noir comes from Marlborough, at the northeastern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. The region’s sunny days and cool nights help preserve acidity while allowing flavour development. Pinot Noir’s red cherry, berry and delicate earthy notes offer elegance without excessive weight.

A natural partner for herb-roasted chicken with wild mushrooms or Atlantic salmon en papillote with fresh thyme. A wine doesn’t have to be powerful to leave a lasting impression.

THE BOLD EXPLORER “Give me flavour, character and something memorable.”

Tawse Sketches Cabernet Merlot VQA| Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada | $22.95 | VINTAGES #130252

The Bold Explorer enjoys expressive wines with generous fruit, structure and a little complexity. Founded in 2001, Tawse has become known for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, reflecting Niagara’s growing focus on vineyard sustainability. This Ontario blend combines the fruit of Merlot with the herbal character and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

A natural pairing with grilled striploin with peppercorn sauce or roasted portobello mushrooms. Boldness isn’t necessarily about alcohol or intensity. It’s about flavour and character.

So, what’s your wine personality? Perhaps you’re a little adventurous, comfortably traditional, quietly romantic or wonderfully bold.

Whatever your preference, remember that wine is not about impressing others. It’s about discovering what brings you pleasure, sharing the experience and occasionally surprising yourself.
