Scarborough Southwest provincial byelection officially called by Elections Ontario for Sept. 3
It’s now official. The writ for the provincial byelection in Scarborough Southwest was dropped by Elections Ontario this morning (Wednesday, Aug. 5).
Along with Scarborough Southwest, provincial byelections will also take place in York-Simcoe and Hamilton East-Stoney Creek on Thursday, Sept. 3.
Candidates known to be running so far in Scarborough Southwest are Mark Bekkering of the Green Party; Ahsanul Hafiz of the Liberal Party; Fatima Shaban of the NDP; and Dr. Noor Tarun for the Progressive Conservative Party.
The deadline for candidates to register to run in the byelection is 2 p.m. on Aug. 20.
The Scarborough Southwest Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) seat became open after Doly Begum, who had served in the role for the NDP since 2018, announced in February of this year that she would be stepping down to run for the Liberals in riding’s federal byelection.
That federal seat became open after Liberal MP Bill Blair, who had held the seat since 2015, announced in February of this year that he would be stepping down to become Canada’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Begum won the federal byelection for the Liberals in Scarborough Southwest on April 13.
Polls will be open on voting day (Sept. 3) for the Scarborough Southwest provincial byelection from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Advance polls will be open on Wednesday, Aug. 26; Thursday, Aug. 27; and Friday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Those who wish to cast their ballot at another time can do so by attending the Scarborough Southwest Elections Office at 2685 Kingston Rd. (southwest corner of Brimley Road South) from Aug. 6 to Sept. 2 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
