Toronto Votes 2026: Council races starting to take shape as candidates register to run in Beaches-East York, Scarborough Southwest and Toronto-Danforth

A number of races for councillor positions in East Toronto wards are starting to see more candidates throw their hats into the ring in advance of the city’s municipal election in October.
As of 9 a.m. on Friday, June 5, the races for councillor in Beaches-East York, Scarborough Southwest and Toronto-Danforth all had candidates registered to run.
In Toronto-Danforth, Susan Chapelle and Jason Stevens have registered for the council race. Paula Fletcher currently serves as the councillor for Toronto-Danforth.
In Scarborough Southwest, Malik Ahmed, Rachel-Ariel Karokis, Philip Mills, and Sharmina Nasrin are registered for the council race. Parthi Kandavel serves the ward as the current councillor.
In Beaches-East York, eight candidates have so far registered to run for the council seat in this fall’s Toronto municipal election.
They are: James Dann, Natalie Johnson, Tycen Legg, Kevin Morrison, Adam Smith, Austin Vieira, Jeff Wahl, and Jennie Worden.
The race to be the Ward 19 Beaches-East York representative on Toronto Council is expected to have a large number of candidates since the seat will not be sought by the incumbent as current councillor Brad Bradford has registered to run for mayor in this year’s municipal election.
Registrations to run for elected positions in Toronto, including mayor, city councillor and school board trustee, opened on the morning of Friday, May 1.
Candidates have until Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. to register their papers to run for the positions of mayor, city councillor, or school trustee. This year’s municipal elections will take place on Monday, Oct. 26.
Please note that residents who wish to complete the candidate nomination process must do so in person at the Toronto Elections City Hall office at 100 Queen St. W. between Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Filings will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the last day of the nominations period (Aug. 21).
Beach Metro Community News will periodically update information on candidates registering to run in the wards of Beaches-East York, Scarborough Southwest and Toronto-Danforth. We will also let readers know about campaign launches as we receive information about them.
To that end, Beaches-East York council candidate Austin Vieira will officially launch his campaign with an event on Tuesday, June 9, at Red Tape Brewery, 159 Main St. The launch takes place from 7 to 9 p.m., and everyone is invited to attend
