Scarborough Southwest Councillor Parthi Kandavel revealed early this week that he is under investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and said he is currently working to uncover more about the nature of the allegations.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, May 10, the city councillor addressed the ongoing investigation, noting his “surprise” to learn of the allegations against him.

“On Friday afternoon, I was surprised to learn of an OPP investigation into allegations against me,” said Kandavel in an Instagram post. “I recognize this is difficult news and hope to resolve the situation quickly.”

Kandavel said he will address any allegations that question his “standards of ethics and integrity.”

“I’ve worked hard to earn the trust of the people of Scarborough Southwest, which I take seriously,” said Kandavel in the post. “I’ve strived to maintain the highest standards of ethics and integrity and will address any allegations that suggest otherwise.”

Kandavel was first elected as city councillor in 2023 following a byelection sparked by the resignation of Gary Crawford, who won the 2022 municipal election in the riding one year prior.

Before entering politics, Kandavel served as a trustee with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) for two terms from 2014 to 2022.

While he’s “still learning more about the investigation and the nature of the allegations,” Kandavel said in his post that he will share updates as new information is made available to him.
