Celebration of Bengali and Canadian literature set for Friday evening in southwest Scarborough

Canada Journal, a Toronto-based literary platform, will host a publication ceremony in southwest Scarborough on the evening of Friday, May 1.
Three publications, contributed to by a large number of Bengali and non-Bengali Canadians, will be showcased at the event which will take place at St. Paul United Church, 200 McIntosh St., starting at 6 p.m.
Noted educator and Bengali cultural exponent Dr. Ikhtyar Omar and well-known pioneer Bengali entrepreneur Gora Aditya will attend the event, along with former and present poets laureate George Elliott Clarke, Anne Michaels, A. F. Moritz, and Lillian Allen. Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford and Scarborough Southwest Councillor Parthi Kandavel will also be attending.
The event will showcase three publications edited and coordinated by established writer Subrata Kumar Das. The publications are Canadai Ekattor Bangalir Oviggota (Experiences of Seventy-One Bengalis in Canada), published from Dhaka; a special issue of Sahitya Ekhaan on Canadian literature edited by poet Shyamashri Ray Karmakar; and a supplement on Canadian literature of Poetry Out Loud (POL) edited by poet Uday Shankar Durjay from London, United Kingdom. All the three publications are significantly contributed to by Canadian writers living coast to coast to coast.
Powered by Barrister Surya Chakrabarti, immigration consultant Manish Paul, and mortgage agent Bazlur Maruf, Friday’s event has already generated much enthusiasm among Bengalis living in the Greater Toronto Area.
The doors will open on Friday at 6 p.m., with the program expected to start at 7 p.m.
