Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre’s 31st annual Black History Month celebration will take place on Sunday, March 1.

As in past years, the event will feature food, entertainment and fun activities. It is presented in partnership with the Eastview BGC.

The celebration will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. and it is a free event geared towards young people between the ages of 13 to 20. The theme for this Sunday’s event is Strength and Prosperity.

Food will be catered by Spice It Up and A Taste of Heaven restaurant.

Black History Month takes place each February and honours the legacy and contributions of Black people in Canada and their communities.

This year marks three decades of Canada officially recognizing and celebrating Black History Month. In 1995, the Government of Canada first proclaimed Black History Month.

But it’s recognition in Ontario goes back much further. In 1978, the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS) was established and its founders, including Dr. Daniel G. Hill and Wilson O. Brooks, presented a petition to the City of Toronto to have February formally proclaimed as Black History Month. In 1979, the first-ever Black History Month proclamation in Canada  was issued by the City of Toronto.

Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre/BGC Eastview is located at 86 Blake St. in the Jones and Danforth avenues area.

Those planning on attending must register by Friday, Feb. 28.
