Saturday candlelight vigil to be held at Kew Gardens for Tumbler Ridge victims

A candlelight vigil will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at the Alex Christie Bandstand in Kew Gardens to honour the victims of the Tumbler Ridge, B.C. mass shooting and to support the residents of the town.

On Feb. 10, nine people died in shootings at a home and a school in the town of about 2,700 people in northeastern British Columbia. Police say the 18-year-old armed suspect died by suicide.

Organizer of the Kew Gardens vigil Christi Johnson, owner of Still Images on Queen Street East and a Tumbler Ridge native, will have candles available for attendees on Saturday night, though people are welcome to bring their own.

“Our little town in this big city stands vigil for the victims in Tumbler Ridge,” said Christi, who told Beach Metro Community News that the parents of the victims would like people to share their children’s names in remembrance.

The victims include:
Abel Mwansa, 12
Kylie Smith, 12
Zoey Benoit, 12
Ticaria Lampert, 12
Ezekiel Schofield, 13
Shannda Aviugana-Durand, 39
Jennifer Jacobs, the mother of the shooter died at her home with her 11-year-old son Emmett Jacobs.
