Parents and students from Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School will rally together tomorrow afternoon to protest the firing of two teachers, and the suspension of all eight Grade 7 and 8 teachers, recently by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).

The rally will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 2:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. in front of the school at 80 Bowmore Rd.

Also, the TDSB recently transferred Bowmore Road’s principal and one of the vice-principals.

“The rally is intended to visibly demonstrate the number of families who believe significant decisions have been made, through both actions and inactions, without sufficient consideration of their impact on students, their education and their well-being, and without meaningful engagement with the affected community,” said a media advisory earlier this week from a parents’ group called Bowmore Community.

The TDSB needs to “meaningfully engage school communities when significant decisions and changes are being considered,” said the advisory.

Among the parents’ concerns are staff disruptions, classroom stability, education disruptions, student safety and school incidents of violence.

Parents and students are also asking for accountability, transparency and decision-making from the TDSB that is student centred, according to the advisory, as no more information is available about the recent firings and suspensions.

“The purpose of the rally is to raise awareness by showing, in a visible and peaceful way, the scale of concern within the Bowmore community,” said the advisory.
