Toronto police seek Montreal man in connection with alleged theft of credit cards

Toronto police seeking help locating a man from Montreal wanted in connection with an investigation into a pair of alleged frauds in October of last year.
According to police news release from this afternoon, a victim in East York received a call from a person allegedly posing as a bank employee. The person allegedly told the victim their credit card had been compromised and that a courier would be sent to their address to collect the card.
This happened on Oct. 1, 2025, in the Cosburn and Pape avenues. Police alleged that once the victim’s card was obtained, it was used in a Mississauga jewelry store to make purchases totalling $11,000.
Two days later, on Oct. 3, police alleged a victim in the The East Mall and Evans Avenue area of Etobicoke received a similar call from a person posing as a bank employee. In that incident, police alleged the credit card obtained from the victim was used in a Mississauga jewelry store to make purchases totalling $14,000.
Through investigation, police have identified Madjid Benmaou, 20, of Montreal, who is wanted on a number of charges including two counts of fraud over $5,000 and two counts of false pretences.
The suspect is described as having a large build, black hair, and dark brown eyes.
Police said he is linked to a black Dodge pick-up truck with Quebec marker AKJ52Z, and has connections to both Quebec and Mississauga.
There may be more victims, police said.
