The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a male was fatally shot by a police officer at the Danforth GO station on Main Street early this morning.

Toronto police were called to the area, specifically by Main Street and Stephenson Avenue, at approximately 1:08 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, for reports of a man with a gun.

According to a post by Toronto police on X (formerly Twitter), the “officer involved shooting” took place after a male was located in the area with a firearm.

Police said in the post earlier this morning that the shooting victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The SIU said just after 9:30 a.m. today that the victim had died and it was now being investigated as a “fatal police-involved” shooting.

As a result of the shooting, the SIU has invoked its mandate and has taken over the investigation. An SIU vehicle could be seen on Main Street near the entrance to the Danforth GO station earlier this morning.

As the SIU is now investigating, Toronto police can make no further comments on the incident.

An independent Ontario government agency, the SIU investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.

The Danforth GO station is currently closed to service and entrances are blocked off by police tape. GO trains on the Lakeshore East Line are not stopping at the station.
