From broadcast to the written word, Christian Hasse has worked in just about every form of journalism. But he believes that photography was always in his genes, something he credits to his father. He was constantly surrounded by the art form, while growing up, documenting his children’s sporting events, or testing out new techniques while on the job.

Fifteen years ago, he moved to the Beach, and fell in love with the neighborhood, with its eccentric and welcoming people, filled with variety, community support and unique landscapes.

He recently began exploring drone photography, becoming captivated with the unconventional aerial images while learning how to control the camera remotely to get the perfect shot. After thousands of photos, and two drones crashed, Hasse was left with a stunning collection that showcased the Beach exactly as it is.

Wanting to put his art out there, Hasse decided to turn his photographs into a calendar, showcasing his favourite works, and creating a month-by-month timeline of the community.

“I know other people do calendars in the Beaches, and everything is shot from the land, straight on. This gives you a totally different perspective. I think it’s very unique,” he explained.

Hasse said he’s lived in the Beach long enough to know what makes it, and what Beachers love. Filled with natural beauty and “if you know you know,” references, his calendar includes views of the lake, Kew Gardens, and even Garden Gate Restaurant (affectionately known as The Goof to most residents).

“Here’s something we’ve seen over and over, but giving you an opportunity to see it from a different angle. The calendar is an easy way to celebrate the Beach, with some beautiful, iconic spaces,” said Hasse.

Although he’s proud of all his shots, Hasse’s favourite has to be his photo from May, capturing an aerial shot of a lone kayaker enjoying a sunny spring day at the Beach.

“I’ve actually got it printed in my home, I love it,” said Hasse, showing off the photo. “It’s a neat catch.”

For each calendar sold, two dollars will be donated towards the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). The calendar will be sold for $25, with Hasse pledging to raise $500 for CAMH.

Hasse said he believes that what CAMH does is essential, and he wants to do his part to help.

“I really believe in what CAMH does, and what it provides to people who are suffering, whether it’s addiction or mental health issues. What they provide to doctors and caregivers to educate them to be able to help people, is tremendous. The stigmatization of mental health has been lessened over the years and that’s partially through the work that CAMH does. I’m just happy to help out in any way that I can,” said Hasse.

He said he is excited to see people view his work in the calendar, especially knowing that the funds will contribute to a cause he is passionate about. Hasse said he is hopeful that with time, he will be able to expand, selling calendars next year, as well as prints, and continuing to give back.

“It’s such a small area, just in the grand scheme of Toronto and Ontario as a whole. But it really showcases different aspects and different seasons. There’s something that will  resonate with every resident,” he explained of the Beach.

The calendar is available locally in various shops throughout the Beach, including the Garden Gate Restaurant, Still Images, Shop Makers, Judy’s and Home Hardware.
