East Toronto residents set to take part in this week’s Maliyah’s Hike for Sinai

The sixth annual Maliyah’s Hike for Sinai is set to take place this Friday and Saturday.
The 126-kilometre hike through a number of Toronto neighbourhoods starts at 928 Eastern Ave. on Friday, Nov. 14, and will conclude at Limon restaurant at 1968 Queen St. E., one of the event’s sponsors.
The hike starts in East Toronto and travels west through High Park and Etobicoke, before looping back towards the Beach.
Maliyah Abigail Riches was born in 2020, at Mount Sinai Hospital. For two weeks, she received life-saving, intensive and round-the-clock care from the staff in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, before being able to come home.
The hike takes place in honour of Malyah’s treatment and to raise awareness and funds for Mount Sinai’s Women’s and Infants’ Health program and most of the participants are East Toronto residents.
During this year’s hike, organizers are aiming to raise $30,000 for the Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank, which provides donor milk to hospitals across Ontario and Atlantic Canada. The milk offers vital immune protection and nutrition for premature and vulnerable infants whose parents may be unable to breastfeed due to medical or logistical challenges.
Through the years, and with over 170,000 steps hiked, the event has garnered more than 840 supporters, while raising in excess of $100,000 to help families such as the Riches.
Local residents are invited to join the hike at any point, or make a donation through the Sinai Health Foundation.
“We hike to help fund the life changing work done by the nurses, doctors, and admin team at Mount Sinai Hospital. They saved our family and will continue to save others who visit Mount Sinai’s NICU on the 17th floor,” says a statement on the event’s website.
