Notre Dame Catholic High School’s annual fundraising walk-a-thon set for this Thursday

The annual Notre Dame High Catholic High School Walk-a-Thon is set for Thursday, Oct. 16.
The event is used to raise money for the Malvern Avenue school through the sponsorships and support of local businesses.
The walk is a long-standing tradition at the local high school, taking place since the early 1980s.
The event is organized by the Notre Dame Athletic Council throughout the beginning of the fall semester.
Isabelle, 17, a member of the council says they start planning it, “pretty much when the school year starts.”
The council walks around the neighbourhood, looking for donations from stores in the community. Some sponsors for this year’s Notre Dame Walk-a-Thon include Candles and Palms Cafe, Social Seven, The Great Escape Book Store, Eaune, Tony & Claudia’s and many more.
“It’s a lot to organize and do. Sometimes people even start looking for sponsors during the summer,” said Isabelle.
In the past, the Walk-a Thon-has funded various improvements to the school including water fountains, benches and upgrades technology.
It’s an important part of the school’s history, allowing students to work with their community, and bring pride to the 84 year old institution.
Jedda Tomlin, a teacher at Notre Dame and the Athletic Director, said that although people may focus on the funding, what’s really most important is getting the students out participating in the event.
“It builds spirit, people have fun. Seeing all the grades doing something together, is what it’s all about,” said Tomlin.
