Concerts, Pape Village Block Party, Community Environment Day among local events set for the last weekend of summer

Concerts, a Block Party, a TTC complex open house, and a Community Environment Day are among events set for East Toronto on what will be the last full weekend of the summer today and tomorrow.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will hosts an open house at the Greenwood Complex.

The open house will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The TTC’s Greenwood Complex is located at 400 Greenwood Ave., south of Danforth Avenue and north of the railway tracks.

Today’s event is a fundraiser for the United Way of Greater Toronto and there will be an admission charge of $5.

Those attending will have the opportunity to explore the complex and learn about subway maintenance and infrastructure facilities.

There will be guided tours of the Greenwood Shop; displays of TTC vehicles and work cars; a virtual subway simulator, face painting, kids activities, a charity barbecue, silent auction and the sale of TTC memorabilia.

This event is accessible, and there will be bus and Wheel-Trans shuttles between Coxwell Station and the Greenwood Complex.

FRIENDS OF FIDDLER’S GREEN AT ACOUSTIC HARVEST SATURDAY NIGHT

Acoustic Harvest will begin its 2025/2026 season with a concert by The Friends of Fiddler’s Green tonight (Saturday, Sept. 20).

Band members Grit Laskin, Ian Robb, Ian Bell, Alistair Brown, James Stephens, and Jeff McClintock will bring their World Domination Tour to the stage at St. Paul’s United Church in Scarborough for “a rollicking” good time.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7:30 p.m.

St. Paul’s United Church is located at 200 McIntosh St.

MARK BATTENBERG’S MUSIC FOR THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX TO BE PERFORMED TONIGHT

Beach musician, composer, producer and songwriter Mark Battenberg will be showcasing a collection of his most prominent works with Mark Battenberg’s Autumn Trilogy of Music which begins tonight (Saturday, Sept. 20) at Danforth Mennonite Church, 2174 Danforth Ave.

The three-part, autumn-inspired concerts feature guest appearances from cellist Sybil Shannahan, violinist Suhashini Arulanandam, and internationally renowned Shakuhachi flute master Debbie Danbrook. Battenberg will be playing the guitar during the shows, using a custom made, one-of-a-kind guitar crafted by local resident and Film Set Carpenter Matthew Sanders.

Part one, Music for the Autumnal Equinox, is on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. and will celebrate the first day of autumn. The concert will feature Battenberg and Danbrook.

PAPE VILLAGE BLOCK PARTY ON THIS WEEKEND

The Pape Village Block Party is slated for this weekend.

The fun will take place on Pape Avenue between Mortimer and Cosburn avenues and is presented by the Pape Village BIA. Times for the Block Party are noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20; and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21.

COUNCILLOR BRADFORD HOSTS COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT DAY ON SATURDAY

A Community Environment Day hosted by Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the parking lot on the west side of Shoppers World Danforth.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shoppers World Danforth is located at 3003 Danforth Ave., and the Community Environment Day will be based in the parking lot at the west side entrances to the former Lowe’s store.

Those attending are invited to drop off unwanted items for reuse, recycling or safe disposal.

Some of the items that are considered acceptable to be dropped off for reuse include sporting goods, books (but not textbooks), cameras, CD/DVD/Blue Ray players, clothing, costume jewelry, small household items, musical instruments, and board games.

There will also be free compost available for collection while supplies last. Kitchen catchers for organics will also be available at this Saturday’s event at a cost of $7.
