A 72-year-old man has been charged in connection with an alleged assault on a TTC streetcar in East Toronto earlier this week.

According to police, officers were called to a reported stabbing in the Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East area on Monday, Aug. 4, at approximately 1:29 p.m.

Police said a woman and a man were both onboard a streetcar travelling south from Broadview Station when they became involved in an altercation. Police alleged the man stabbed the woman during the altercation.

The woman then exited the streetcar and asked for assistance, said police. She was located nearby and taken to hospital for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police said the man fled the area prior to the arrival of police officers and was last seen walking northbound on Broadview Avenue.

The man and woman were not known to each other, police said.

On Aug. 5, police said in a news release that Gullu Jiwani, 72, of Toronto, had been arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and aggravated assault.

In the news release, police alleged that during the course of the investigation the female victim was identified as wanted for two previous reports of assault on two victims that occurred in Broadview Subway Station on Monday, Aug. 4. In those two alleged incidents, police said both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Sabrina Young, 31, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with two counts of assault, disobey the lawful order of a court, and assault with a weapon or imitation weapon.
