Migration Celebration, including community parade, set for Dentonia Park this week

East Toronto residents are invited to a Migration Celebration in Dentonia Park this week.
Presented by Shadowland Theatre, the celebration will use theatre arts to honour the vital role of birds, butterflies, and animals in our ecosystems and daily lives.
Events are set for Wednesday, Aug.6; Thursday, Aug. 7; and Friday, Aug. 8 in the park which is located at 80 Thyra Ave., just northwest of Danforth and Victoria Park avenues.
Shadowland Theatre artists will be in residence at Dentonia Park for all three days, and the Migration Celebration will culminate with a community parade on the evening of Friday, Aug. 8.
Residents are invited to the park to participate in Shadowland’s arts programming for all ages.
Those taking part will have the chance to create costumes and puppets, learn music and songs, share stories, experience Indigenous teachings and go on nature walks. Cameroonian musician Njacko Backo will collaborate with Shadowland’s Chris Wilson and Jim Bish to lead music workshops and provide parade tunes. Alan Colley will offer Medicine Wheel teachings and guided walks to explore the creatures and natural medicines found in the park.
All of those activities will work towards the Migration Celebration parade in the park, starting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 8.
Sponsors for this week’s Migration Celebration are East End Arts, the Thorncliffe Park Women’s Committee, Shwasti, the city’s Toronto Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Foundation.
