Toronto Beaches sweep first round playoff series against Mimico in Ontario Junior Lacrosse League action

The brooms were out and the sweep was complete as the Toronto Beaches Junior A lacrosse team took their Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL) opening round playoff series in three straight over the Mimico Mountaineers this week.
The Beaches beat Mimico 9-2 in Game Three of the series played last night (Thursday, July 17) at the Pickering Recreation Complex.
While the Beaches played their regular season home games at Ted Reeve Arena at Main Street and Gerrard Street East, the team’s playoff home games have been moved to the Pickering Recreation Complex on Valley Farm Road in Durham Region as the ice is now being put back in at Ted Reeve.
Earlier in the series, the Beaches beat Mimico 7-4 in Game One and 9-6 in Game Two.
Last night the Beaches were led by a five-goal performance from Liam Aston. Also scoring for the Beaches in the July 17 victory were Willem Firth and Josh Mills, with two goals each.
Eight of the 11 teams in the OJLL made the playoffs, and the Beaches finished second overall in the regular season while the Mountaineers were seventh.
The Beaches will now get a bit of a break until their second round playoff opponent is determined.
Other OJLL playoff series are the first place Orangeville Northmen against the eighth place Kitchener-Waterloo; the Whitby Warriors against the St. Catharines Athletics; and the Six Nations Arrows against the Peterborough Lakers.
In action last night, Orangeville also completed a three-game sweep against Kitchener-Waterloo.
In the series between Six Nations and Peterborough, the Lakers have won the first two matches with Game Three set for tonight (July 18) in Peterborough.
The OJLL playoff championship trophy is the Iroquois Cup.
Its winner goes on to represent Ontario and play in the national championship tournament for the Minto Cup.
The 2025 Minto Cup will be played in St. Catharines from Aug. 16 to 23. As hosts, the St. Catharines Athletics are guaranteed a spot in this year’s Minto Cup. Other participants will be the playoff champions of the OJLL (unless it is St. Catharines in which case the OJLL finalist will qualify); and the champions of the Alberta and the British Columbia Junior A lacrosse leagues. Last year’s Minto Cup champions were the Coquitlam Adanacs from B.C.
