Renovation of well-known Fallingbrook Road heritage property overlooking lake likely to be approved by city

Toronto Council is considering an application under Section 33 of the Ontario Heritage Act to make alterations to a heritage property at 1 Fallingbrook Rd.
According to the Notice of Decision from the city clerk’s office, as of April 24, 2025, Council will approve the alterations if they keep in accordance with plans and drawings prepared by the developer (Richard Wengle Architects Inc.).
Development at the site will be deemed acceptable by the Senior Manager of Heritage Planning on the condition that the project architect provides satisfactory building permit drawings, and a description of materials and finishes.
According to the Notice of Decision, the architect is also expected to obtain all necessary planning permissions, including a Minor Variance; a small change or permission granted by a municipality to deviate from the specific requirements of a zoning bylaw.
The iconic house at foot of Fallingbrook Road, where the road turns north and Queen Street East ends, is known as Edgemount House and was built in 1889. The house was designated as a heritage property by the former City of Scarborough in 1986.
According to second party developer ERA Architects Inc. in a statement to Beach Metro, changes will primarily focus on restoring the existing structure. However, details regarding the project are still in early stages of development, stating that more details would be shared at a later date.
“We’re incredibly grateful to be able to restore the heritage elements of the home. However, the project is still in its very early stages,” said ERA Architects Inc. in an email to Beach Metro Community News.
“We’re very proud of the thought and care going into this restoration, and look forward to sharing it when the time is right.”
Richard Wengle Architects Inc. first prepared and filed plans for alterations to the property in October 2024, in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Heritage Planning, Heritage Impact Assessment, as well as revised plans/drawings prepared by ERA Architects from Feb. 7 of this year.
