Beach Metro News winter writing contest is on

Attention all aspiring authors, working wordsmiths, and patrons of properly-penned prose: Beach Metro News is proud to announce our now-annual second winter writing contest.

The rules, as always, are simple: write something – fiction, non-fiction, memoir, poetry, dream journal entries – less than 1,000 words, and beginning with the sentence below:

“A rainstorm etched away at the towering snowbank pushed against the woodshed in the neighbour’s backyard.”

That sentence was contributed by Teri Vlassopoulos, whose debut novel Escape Plans was reviewed here in November. Published by Invisible Publishing, the book tells the story of three family members who drift apart and closer together in unexpected ways, narrated in turn by all three main characters.

Vlassopoulos will help decide the winning entry, along with editorial staff at Beach Metro. The winner will receive a $50 credit at The Great Escape Bookstore, 957 Kingston Rd.

Email entries to contests@beachmetro.com by 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4.
