The Monarch Park Boys of ‘spring’ gave it all this season and worked extremely hard, according to coach Nick Cunjak.
That hard work paid off and saw the team make it to the Tier II city finals against a strong and determined Riverdale team, which was playing for its third title in a row.
Monarch Park had finished the season with a 2-2 record, and after easily dispatching Parkdale in the quarter-finals with a score of 14-0, the team faced a strong Central Tech squad in the semis.
With pitcher Tyler Bertin in top form, Monarch Park was able to hold Central Tech from scoring in the first few innings and advanced to the final by defeating them 7-4.
Talbot Park was the venue for the final against Riverdale, on a hot afternoon that had Bertin starting for Monarch Park again. He was able to keep the opponents from scoring until the fourth inning, when Riverdale got on the board. An insurance run in the sixth was enough to see Riverdale take its third consecutive title.
