A man has died after being shot by a Toronto police officer in the Victoria Park and Danforth avenues area just after noon today.

Police were called to the area for a report of a man with a knife earlier in the day.

In a tweet , Toronto police said an officer discharged their firearm at a male at 12:09 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10.

The man was then taken to hospital by emergency run. The SIU has confirmed to Beach Metro Community News that the shooting victim died in hospital this afternoon.

In a tweet just before 2 p.m., the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said that it had invoked its mandate and taken over the investigation of the fatal shooting.

The shooting took place at the rear of the Shopper’s World plaza on the southwest corner of Victoria Park and Danforth avenues.

Police had the area behind the shopping plaza and the railroad tracks taped off as that appears to be where the shooting took place.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officials in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Anyone who may have information, including video or photos, about this incident is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
