Ziauddin Yousafzai_1168

April 1, 2014

Ziauddin Yousafzai, father of Pakistani blogger and girls’ rights activist Malala Yousafzai, speaks to Grade 4 and 5 students at Secord Elementary School on March 29. Along with Plan Canada president Rosemary McCarney, a Beacher who wrote a recently published picture book called Every Day is Malala Day, Ziauddin spoke about the rights of all girls and boys to go to school, free from forced labour and the kind of misogynist violence his daughter survived. Before he let the students get back to class, Ziauddin, a long-time teacher, asked them to recite a line by the poet Khalil Gibran: “Keep me away from the greatness that does not bow to children.” PHOTO: Andrew Hudson
