Bring the kids, a blanket and your favourite lawn chair and cosy up for an evening of Movies Under the Stars in a park near you. Join Ward 32 Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon and your neighbours at Moncur Park on Gainsborough Road for Escape from Planet Earth on Wednesday, Aug. 21. On Thursday, Aug. 22, Princess Bride will be showing at East Lynn Park on Danforth Avenue. And on Sunday, Aug. 25, Jonathon Ashbridge Park will screen Life of Pi. All movies start at 8 p.m.

Councillor McMahon will hold a preliminary community meeting about development at 1327 Queen St. E. on Monday, Aug. 19, at Maple Cottage, 62 Laing St., in the Queen and Greenwood neighbourhood. The meeting will start at 7 p.m.

East End Arts, a new arts service organization launched in June with a mandate to support local arts initiatives in Wards 29, 30, 21 and 32, is hosting three community meetings to discuss priority programs. All are welcome to register for the talks, which will be held on Aug. 12 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Hangman Art Gallery, on Aug. 14 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Community Centre 55 and on Aug. 17 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Cosburn United Church. To celebrate Blue Flags, an eco label that recognizes beaches with high water quality and environmental management, Environmental Defence Canada will host a day of summer activities at Woodbine Beach on Sunday, August 18 from 10 to 4 p.m. Featuring beach yoga, sandcastle contests, scavenger hunts, kites and prizes, the event aims to highlight the success of Woodbine and 17 other beaches and four marinas now flying Blue Flags in Canada.

 

After nearly 500 people came out to enjoy fresh produce, live music, prepared foods and kids’ activities at the Fairmount Park Farm Market’s trial day, the market will now run every Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. until October 30. The park’s wading pool, play structures and baseball, soccer and tennis facilities will be open next to the market from 2 to 6 p.m. Other local farmer’s markets include the East Lynn Park market, which runs Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. and the Leslieville Farmers’ Market at Jonathan Ashbridge Park, held Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Providence Healthcare is also hosting a special farmer’s market on August 1, 22 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the west side of the building at 3276 St. Clair Avenue East.
