Sheena Fraser McGoogan will be holding an exhibition of new works at Arts On Queen, 2198 Queen St. E., from July 5 to 30. Called Greenland Homes, this exhibition will feature about 20 paintings from the trip she and her husband, author/historian Ken McGoogan took last fall aboard the M. S. Explorer. They sailed through part of the Northwest Passage, around Baffin Island, and along the coast of Greenland. It was along this coast that McGoogan saw the brightly painted houses that have inspired this show.
I noted the colour, the light, the big skies..., said McGoogan. They [the houses] mesmerized me with their colour, and the way they perched along the ocean shores. I also loved the way they worked together with the landscape. She and her husband are planning another trip to the Arctic this time to Kane Basin this coming autumn.
There will be a special Artist Reception on July 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, and gallery hours, call Arts On Queen at 416-699-6127.
The Cobalt Gallery, 870 Kingston Rd., will be hosting a summer-long exhibition of new works by three local artists. Andrea Bird, Jodi Wheeler, and Anne-Marie Olczak which will be showing from July 5 through to Aug. 31.
These recent works mark a return to drawing, says Anne-Marie Olczak. Her multi-layered drawings are her attempt to capture the fleeting, ephemeral nature of childhood.
Jodi Wheeler (right) is presenting new acrylic paintings on canvas with photo transfer that capture moments in the city life of Toronto as well as the rural Ontario landscape.
Andrea Bird is new to Cobalt Gallery. She is an encaustic/collage artist who lives a few hours from Toronto. Working with wax and collage is her preferred medium for expressing such themes as the life journey, our connection to nature, beauty and loss.
There will be an opening reception July 5 from 2 to 6 p.m. and everyone is welcome. For more information, and gallery hours, call the Cobalt Gallery at 416-694-0156, or visit www.cobaltgallery.ca.
