The Kew Beach Boathouse stored many boats starting in the early 1900s. A half-century later, Lake Ontario's pounding waves caused extensive damage to the structure as evidenced by this archival photograph taken in 1952. There was talk of tearing it down but Mayor Donald Summerville (a Beach resident) would have none of it. He secured money in the city's budget to refurbish and move the boathouse back from the waterline in 1953-54.
Today, the boathouse serves as a pavilion, and is quite a convenient place to dash into during a thunderstorm as I have many times over the years.
